Conservation measures in place to save sharks

The National Marine Fisheries Service implemented conservation measures for depleted coastal sharks in the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. Stock assessments conducted in 2006 revealed sandbar, porbeagle and dusky shark populations have been severely overfished, and rebuilding timeframes are projected at 66, 100 and 400 years, respectively.

Great white saga continues

Rather, we offer a status report on a juvenile great white that was released from the Monterey Bay Aquarium in early February wearing special tags enabling scientists at Stanford University's Hopkins Marine Station to track its movements.

Consumers, scuba divers and photographers join the efforts of the Humane Society of The United States to expose the truth behind shark tournaments. 100 million to 1 - This is the ratio of sharks to humans killed by one another in 2007. The average number of human fatalities for the last two decades, per the International Shark Attack File, was five. Compare that to the average of eighteen annual fatalities from dogs, and you have more to fear from Fido than you do from Jaws.

I always enjoy the feedback I get from our readers regarding the new issues we print. It is always fun when people love what you do, and then let you know they love it.
